HISTORY

Kibale National Park was gazetted in 1993 and includes what used to be called the Kibale Forest Corridor Game Reserve established in 1964 to allow additional habitat for the large herds of wildlife in Queen Elizabeth National Park. It also served as an important stop as a migratory route to other game reserves and Murchison Falls National Park for the huge herds of elephants that existed in Uganda’s western frontier. The ethnic groups which live near the park are the Bakiga and the Batoro, many of whom grow cash crops such as coffee and eucalyptus trees.

LOCATION

Kibale National Park is found in the west of Uganda, in Kabarole District, 35km south of Fort portal town and is 320km from Kampala. It has an altitude range of between 1,110metres to 1,590metres above sea level. Kibale National Park is normally approached from Kampala using Kampala-Mityana Fort portal road. From Fort portal town, it is approached using the Kamwenge road. Coming from Fort Portal town centre, follow the Lugard Road, northwards for about 1km and immediately before the Mpanga River, turn right and continue 12km till you reach a major junction that leads to Lake Nkuruba and Ndali lodge on the right and on the left, the road takes you straight to another 12km to Kanyanchu tourist centre which is also the centre of the tourist activities.
