KIBALE FOREST NATIONAL PARK
Safaris, Tours and attractions
WILDLIFE ATTRACTIONS
The primates of Kibale National Park have been the most important objects of attraction for tourists and researchers. At least 13 primate species have been recorded in the park which cannot be found in any other park in East Africa. The nine diurnal primates found in the park include blue monkeys, red colobus, black and white colobus, olive baboon, grey-cheeked mangabey, L’Hoest’s monkey, red-tailed monkey, vervet monkey and chimpanzee. The red colobus monkey, exists in Kibale forest area and can hardly be seen anywhere although very few numbers survive in Semliki National Park.

The most exciting primate for visitors in the park is the chimpanzee and several communities of the chimps have been habituated for tourists and researchers. Currently, 32 people in groups of four are allowed to go and see the chimps in the morning and afternoon shifts under the management of the Uganda Wildlife Authority. However, the park also supports a variety of other mammals although it is not an easy place to see them. The mammals include lions, leopards, elephants, buffaloes, hippos, warthogs, giant forest hog, bush pig, bush buck, sitatunga and red and blue duikers. The park also hosts forest elephants, which are smaller and hairier than the savanna elephants. These elephants frequently move into the Kanyanchu area during the wet season.
About 335 species of birds have been recorded in the park, of which four species have not been seen in any other parks in the country. These ones include the blue-headed bee-eater, the masked apalis, nahan’s francolin and cassin’s spinetail. In addition, there are 200 species of butterflies, 14 species of snakes, 20 species of other reptiles, 27 species of frogs and a large number of moths and insects.
The most common tree species are wild rubber trees, polita figs and wild palms. In addition there are water lilies, ferns and flowers such as those of the ipomea species, wetland grasses, sedges and reeds.
