Bird Watching
The official checklist of the birds includes 462 species and includes some of East Africa’s rarest and most sought after birds such as the Karamoja apalis and the black breasted barbets. The grasslands around the airstrip are a good place to search for the black-headed plover, black-bellied bustard, common buttonquail and flappet larks. The grasslands of the upper Narus valley host migrant harriers, red-winged lark, northern red bishops and white-winged widowbird.

The Apoka rest camp, in the park headquarters, is a common sight for nubian woodpecker, superb starlings and mosque swallow. The granite out crop near Katenga attracts a number of cliff specialists such as rock martin, freckled nightjar, speckled pigeon and a pair of barn owls.
The most exciting birding occurs at Kananorok hot springs in the Kidepo valley. This is a great spot for the rare Karamoja apalis and other arid specials such as heuglin’s wheatear. The Montane forest on mount Lonyili has a variety of specials that cannot be found at lower altitudes in the park. These include Mountain buzzards, scaly francolin, bee eaters and the Abyssinian crimsonwing. Mount Lonyili is the only sight in the country to see the rock-loving cisticola. Other key species include rose-ringed parakeet, white-bellied go-away-bird, four-banded sand grouse, bruce’s green pigeon, red-fronted and black-breasted barbets, isabelline, african grey fly catcher as well as foxy and red-pate cisticolas.

The grassland around the airstrip is a common site for black-headed plover, singing bush lark, whilst harlequin quail, common buttonquail, black-bellied bustard rufous-naped and flappet larks as well as the croaking cisticola.
