KIDEPO VALLEY NATIONAL PARK
Safaris, Tours and attractions
WILDLIFE ATTRACTIONS
The park harbors one of the most exciting fauna of any Uganda national park. The park hosts a total of 86 mammal species, only the third highest in Uganda, of which 28 species are not found anywhere else in the country. The carnivore species, unique to Kidepo, include the cheetah and hunting dog, bat-eared fox and stripped hyena. The less common ungulates include klipspringer, dikdik and bride gazelle. Other large ungulates include zebras, Rothschild’s giraffes, buffaloes, elands, bushbucks, waterbucks, elephants and the jackal, among many others.

Carnivores present include lions, leopards and several small cats. Other predators in the park include the hyena and a variety of mustelids, genets and mongooses. The antelope species found in the park are the topi, eland, bush buck, common duiker, oribi and the Uganda kob. Five primate species exist in the park including the localized patas monkey and the endemic Kavirondo bush baby. There are also high chances of seeing tree climbing lions that always sit on sausage trees along the narrow valley.
Unfortunately, Kidepo like many other Uganda parks, during the Idi Amin regime is still recovering from years of poaching that left many animals depleted. The gazelle and lesser kudu, the stripped hyena and the oryx can hardly be seen and are presumed to be locally extinct. The bird checklist in Kidepo is very impressive given that there are over 475 bird species, second to the Queen Elizabeth National Park, of which 100 species are practically confined in Kidepo. There are 56 species of rapters. The commonly observed are pigmy falcon, tawny eagle, secretary bird and several types of vultures. Among the birds regarded as the Kidepo specials is the ostrich, the fox, re-throated bee eaters, Abyssinian roller, Karamoja apalis, rufous chatterer, golden pipit to name only a few. Other noted key species include sand grouse, brown-backed wood pecker, standard-winged night jars, rose-ringed parakeet, white-faced scops owl, singing bushlark, red-wingedlark, as well as the eastern yellow and jackson’s hornbills.
