KIDEPO VALLEY NATIONAL PARK
LOCATION
Kidepo National park lies in the far northeast of Uganda bordering Sudan and Kenya between the Nageya valley and the hills of Karamoja. It is 840km from Kampala City. The altitude range of the park is between 914metres and 2,750metres and the highest point is in Mount. Morongole which is at 2,750metres.
The park lies in the Karamoja District in Uganda where the famous pastoralists commonly known as the Karamajong raise their cattle across the plains.
DESCRIPTION
Kidepo National Park covers an area of 1,442 sq km and is one of the most spectacular national parks in Uganda since its establishment in 1960s under the reign of President Milton Obote. The park is seldom visited by tourists due to the expense and difficulty of getting there. Nevertheless, it is a most alluring destination boasting of exceptional game, bird viewing and amazing scenery. Anyone who has been to Kidepo National Park has greatly admired the scenery and with the same common thought,”it could not be any better”.

Kidepo National Park has a mountainous terrain broken by the Narus valley in the southwest and Kidepo valley in the northeast. The vegetation is open and lightly wooded savanna with patches of montane forests, ricarian woodland, borassus palms and rocky koppies. The park has two shallow valley systems with a rugged dry mountain terrain.
In the southwest of the park is the Narus valley bordered by the Napore range to the northwest. The high ground separates the Narus valley from the Kidepo valley in the northeast. South of the Kidepo valley is the Morungole range and to the north is Mount Lotuke. Other habitats within the park include montane forest, grassy plains, open tree savanna and dry thorn bush.
Low rainfall and a long dry season lasting almost six months are characteristic of this region. As a result, Kidepo suffers more compared to any other national park. As a result, the animals leave Kidepo valley during the dry seasons and head for the woodland of Narus valley between March and April. The rains normally return to the Kidepo valley from April to October and this creates conditions that are good for game viewing as more animals are concentrated around the park headquarters.
