LAKE MBURO NATIONAL PARK
Safaris, Tours and attractions
Bird Watching
The park has over 310 species of birds. These include among others open water birds, lake shore and papyrus swamp birds, woodland birds, grassland birds and forest birds. Most of the park species of birds are “generalists”, that is, they can easily be seen anywhere. Birds of the open water in this park include pink-backed pelican, african darter, white pelicans, long-tailed cormorant and greater cormorant. Among the lake shore and papyrus swamp bird are fish eagle, pied kingfisher, african Finfoot, great white eaglet, night heron.

The Park’s well developed acacia vegetation, harbors a number of birds. Lake Mburo is the best place in Uganda to see the Southern savanna species particularly the red-faced barbet, a scarce bird. It is also the best place in Uganda to find the african Finfoot and most of the papyrus endemics.
The scenic lakeside track allows access to aquatic inhabitants such as greater swamp warbler. The white-winged warbler and the papyrus Gonolek vocalize from the papyrus in the mornings and respond greatly to tape recordings. The shoebill may also be observed but is irregular in the park.
A surprisingly large number of rafters occur in this park. Among the 35 species recorded are long crested and marshal eagles, African fish eagle, African hawk, African marsh harrier among many others. The Kigambira loop provides the opportunity to see the localized red-faced barbet.
The more open grassland, north of Rwonyo camp, along the Zebra track is worth exploring for Southern red bishop, brown-chested clover, Coqui francolin. The scenic lake side track allows access to aquatic habitats such as Greater swamp warbler. The white-winged warbler and the papyrus gonolek vocalize from the papyrus in the mornings and respond greatly to tape recordings. The Shoebill may also be observed but it is irregular in the park.
