Geography

This is the smallest National Park in Uganda, covering an area of 36sq km, and is mostly inhabited by the bafumbira and the batwa. The park covers the northern slopes of the three virunga volcanoes namely, Mt. Muhavura (4,127metres), Mt. Sabinyo (3,645metres) and Mt. Mgahinga (3,474metres). The Park is bordered to the South by the Republic of Rwanda and to the west by the Democratic Republic of Congo. Each of these countries protects it’s own portion of the Virungas. In total, the three parks together form the 434sq km Virunga conservation area.

Garama cave excursion
The cave is 342metres in length and 14metres deep and is now inhabited. This is one of the caves where the batwa, who were warriors, once lived and fought their neighbours the Bantus. The guide can show you how the Batwa lived and fought out of the cave.

Guided Walks
Guided nature walks can take you up to the boarder trail. A visa is not required. The hike takes you through a trail that climbs up the base of Sabinyo through fine montane forest before turning towards the Congo. Upon reaching Congo, you cut along the international boarder. The return league to the park headquarters is good for bird watchers and there are possibilities of seeing golden monkeys and elephants.
The guided walks can also take to a viewing platform, 800 metres from the park gate and once on top, the visitor can have a good view of the park and the surrounding areas.

Bird Watching
Mgahinga National Park is also a birders paradise but due to it’s relative remoteness, the park has received little attention from bird watchers.

Activities and Attractions

Gorilla Tracking
The most popular activity is gorilla tracking and the habituated gorilla group in the park is called, Nyakagezi. Gorilla tracking in this park depends on whether the gorillas are in the park as they sometimes move across the boarder.

Hiking
Mgahinga National Park offers three extinct volcanoes for hikers. Mt. Sabinyo (3,645metres), Mt. Gahinga (3,474metres) and Mt. Muhavura (4,127metres). These mountains do not require special mountaineering gear.

This fact is reflected in the relatively short official bird list from the park. However, birders are likely to encounter some of Uganda’s spectacular birds such as the scarce Rwenzori turaco, lagden’s bush-shrike and scarlet-tufted malachite sunbird. Other key species include the handsome francolin, Dusky turtle dove, Rwenzori nightjar, Alpine chat, Kivu ground Thrush, White-tailed blue flycathcher and the montane double-collared sunbird. The bird guides in the park are always available for visitors for showing visitors the best bird spots. Other key bird species in the par include the ostrich, Pygmy Falcon, Yellow-necked spur fowl and the stone Partridge among others.

Cultural Performance
Traditional dances such as the emuya of the Naporra and Nyangiya, ethnic groups. Lara karaka and Apiti dances can be organized for you by the local community which normally has cultural entertainers available on request.
