Geography
Mount Elgon National Park, lies on the Kenyan boarder, East of Mbale town. The park size is 1,145sq km and hosts Mount Elgon. The park is named after Mount Elgon which is the 8th highest Mountain in Africa, (4,321m), with the largest base of any extinct volcano in the world.
This volcano is estimated to have erupted more than 20 million years ago and it is thought to have remained active for another 14,000,000years. The tallest peak is on the Ugandan side of the boarder, called Wagagai peak (4,321m).

Wildlife and Vegetation

The park’s vegetation is characterized by tall afro montane forests, below 2,500m and low canopy montane forest and bamboo between 2500m and 3000m.
Hikers on Mount Elgon are more likely to encounter large mammals such as black and white colobus monkeys, blue monkey, de brazza monkey as well as Leopard, Buffalo, Sitatungas and Duiker. The official check list is 24 mammal species.
The mountain also supports a rich variety of forest birds such as Jackson’s francolin, green tinker bird, Alpine chat, red-throated wryneck among others.

Activities and Attractions

Mountaineering

Climbing Mount Elgon doesn’t require special equipment and most of the trail heads can be reached on public transport. The most established route to climb Mount Elgon is the Sasa trail, at Budadili on the western slopes. Other trails are Piswa trail at Kapkwata and Sipi trail at Kapkwai. A climb through the mountain up to the highest peak normally takes five days.

Day Hikes

Short walk trails between three to eleven kilometers offer excellent opportunities to explore the flora and Fauna of Mount Elgon in a short period. Short walks can also lead you to the caves. The popular forest exploration centre trail can make you enjoy the chebonet falls, Kapkwai cave, the talking tree and the spectacular view point which lies just beyond.
