Bird Watching
A visit to Murchison Falls is a must for a serious birder. The bird experience is great. The park has a recorded 450 species of birds. Between the paraa rest camp and the ferry crossing, expect to see Blue-naped Mousebird, Spotted Morning Thrush, Chest-nut Crowned Sparrow Weaver, Vitelline Masked Weaver, Green-winged Pytilia, Silver bird and the Black-headed Gonolek.
At the Nile Safari camp there are also opportunities for good birding. The shoebill is a common resident and is one of Uganda’s most sought after bird. Other birds expected to be seen around this area include Goliath Heron, Saddled-billed Stork, Grey Crowned Crane and Long-toed Plover. 
A wealth of birds also occurs along the banks of the River bank as you take a boat cruise to the bottom of the falls. Among the common species are African Darter, Goliath Heron, Saddle-billed Stork, African Spoonbill, Fulvous and White-faced Whistling Ducks, Egyptian and Spur-winged Geese, Black Crake, Purple Swamp hen, Senegal Thick-knee and African Skimmer.
Ground hornbills are a common sight in the borassus savanna and this is also the best spot for the Abyssinian roller. Areas of short grass are favorite of spotted thick-knee and Plain-backed Pipit. At the vicinity of Sambiya River lodge and along the entrance, expect to see a Brown-backed woodpecker, Green-backed Eremomela, Emin’s Shrike and White-fronted Black Chat.
At the top of the falls expect to see Pel’s fishing Owl, Rock Pranticoles, Bat Hawk and a variety of Night Jars among others.
En route to your game drive on the northern side of the river expect to see birds such as Blue-naped Mouse bird, Black-headed Gonolek and Masked weaver, among others. Nocturnal birds are often plentiful in this area and may include Spotted and Verreaux’s Eagle-owls and a plethora of spectacular Nightjars such as Plain, Long-tailed and Pennant-winged among others.

In Budongo forest, through the escarpment over looking Lake Albert, key species include Brown Rumped Bunting, Cliff Chat, Black-billed Wood Dove, Vinaceous Dove, Fox’s Cisticola, Grey-headed Bush strike, Black-billed Barbet, Grey-headed Olive Back, Black- bellied Fire Finch, Madagascar Heron as well as the Lesser Masked Weaver, Yellow-billed Barbet, Black-capped Apalis, Brown Twin-spot, Chocolate-backed Kingfisher among others.
