MURCHISON FALLS NATIONAL PARK
Safaris, Tours and attractions
VISIT TO THE TOP OF THE FALLS
A visit to the top of the falls is a unique and breathtaking natural spectacle that will offer the visitor a sight of one of the most powerful natural flow of water on earth. The 40 metre wide River Nile is forced through a seven metre gap down 42 metres below. The narrow gap and the volume of water that passes through the ancient rocks makes a thunderous noise that will give a visitor one of the most amazing moments of his visit.
The staggering power with which the Nile crushes through the narrow gap and not to mention the deafening roar impressed Sir Samuel Baker in 1864 that he named it as one of the most amazing and beautiful spectacle of the Nile that he named it in honor of the President of Royal Geographical Society at that time, Lord Murchison. The park also gets its name by virtue of this wonderful spectacle.

There is a picnic site near the falls and there are also various view points from which to take photographs. A short foot path goes down hill to a fenced view point which makes you see the waterfalls’ head. A longer foot path offers a face on view not only of Murchison Falls but also another powerful waterfall a few hundred metres to its north.
If you wish to maximize the various view points at the falls, give yourself at least two hours especially in the afternoon, when the sun is best for photography. There is hardly any wildlife around the falls, which is a big relief to visitors who may walk to the falls unaccompanied with an armed ranger. However, expect to see a troop of baboons or black and white colobus monkeys near the picnic sites.
