MURCHISON FALLS NATIONAL PARK
Safaris, Tours and attractions
Murchison Falls is Uganda’s largest protected area, covering an area of nearly 4000 sq km. It is under the Murchison Falls Conservation area which comprises of Bugungu and Karuma Wildlife Reserves and the Budongo forest. Murchison falls is worth visiting owing to the spectacular waterfalls after which the park was named. The Victoria Nile is forced through a seven metre wide gap in the Rift Valley escarpment down a drop of about 50 metres creating one of the world’s most magnificent waterfalls.
Lying between the altitudes of 619 metres to 1292 metres, Murchison Falls has a lower altitude, by Uganda’s standards, than other tourist sites in the country.

The annual average rainfall is 1,085 millimeters. The Victoria Nile divides the park into two equal halves. North of the River, the vegetation consists of tall, green grassland with isolated stands of borassus palms, acacia trees and riverine woodland. South of the river, the vegetation is of denser woodland giving way in the Southeast to canopy forest around Rabongo hill, the highest peak in the park. In general, its vegetation comprises of iron wood forest, dry and mist woodlands, papyrus swamps, lakes and rivers.
Murchison Falls National Park has over 76 mammal species and 450 bird species. Paraa, situated along side the River Nile, is the centre of tourist activities and all access roads leading into the park end at Paraa where a motor ferry provides the only means of crossing from the northern and southern banks. The popular launch trip at the base of the falls departs from Paraa as does all the game drives.
