WILDLIFE ATTRACTIONS
Over 76 mammal species have been recorded in Murchison Falls National Park despite the heavy poaching of the 1960’s and 1970’s. Wildlife includes elephants, warthog, giraffe, buffalo, bush buck, water buck, kongoni, reed buck, side-stripped jackal and primate species such as vervet monkey and olive baboon. Less frequently observed are leopards, spotted hyena and patas monkey. Among the herbivores, the lions have a big population.
The Rabongo forest which is part of Murchison Falls harbors black and while Colobus monkeys, Chimpanzees and other forest primates.
The bird check list goes at 460 different species of birds. The key species include, the rare shoebill stork, secretary bird, denham’s bustard, senegal thick-knee, rock prantincole, egyptian-plover, abyssinian ground hornbill, black-billed barbet, brown-backed woodpecker, beautiful sunbird, chestnut-crowned sparrow-weaver, paradise whydah, white-rumped seedeater as well as the vinaceous dove.
