A Visit to the ancient salt mines
At the enclave of Lake Katwe town, is one of the oldest salt mines and industry in Uganda that has been in existence from as far back as the 14th Century. In 1962, Speke, one of the first Europeans to visit Uganda, noted several local references of the existence of a salt lake on the Northern shore of Lake Edward.
When captain Lugard arrived at Katwe in 1890, he noted piles of salt in heaps covered by grass, some beautifully white and pink. Three quarters of a mile of Katwe town was a salt lake. Lake Katwe, today, is not the same as that encountered by other early European visitors because it subsequently dried up. Commercial salt extraction from the lake was at its peak in the late colonial era producing about 2000 tonnes of salt annually.

The present day Katwe was formerly known as Myiko. It is still very interesting to see how the local people are still traditionally mining this salt using old technology of the past.
