QUEEN ELIZABETH NATIONAL PARK
Safaris, Tours and attractions
HISTORY
The earth movements and volcanic eruptions during the first half million years ago, in the Pleistocene period, formed a valley characterized by the steep escarpments which became the location of several pre-historic sites while the thin vegetation of large areas facilitated the discovery of archeological material including early Paleolithic stone tools. The western Rift Valley and its landscape dotted with volcanic craters became the location of the park.

In the early 20th century a wave of sleeping sickness plagued the country. Many people fled the area around Queen Elizabeth between 1925 and 1947. In addition there was a need to separate animals especially elephants from the people. In 1925, a department was set up to address this objective. Accordingly, a number of game reserves, national parks and other sanctuaries were established over a period of time. Indeed, this protection of animals stopped the destruction of cultivation and villages by marauding animals especially elephants. For example, Parc National des Virungas across the border was created in 1925 by the Belgian Authorities and equally in the late 1920’s, saw the establishment of Lake George Game Reserve and Lake Edward Game Reserve which were later in 1952 combined and gazetted into a national park known as Kazinga National Park. However, two years later when Queen Elizabeth visited the park, it was renamed in her honor.
During the Idi Amin’s regime, the park was renamed Rwenzori National Park but it regained its original name in 1991 when Rwenzori Mountains National Park was gazetted.
LOCATION
The park is located in the south west of Uganda, bordered to the south west by Lake Edward and to the north east by Lake George and Mountains of the Moon which rise over 5000 metres. It is bounded to the west by the Ishasha River and to the south by Kigezi Wildlife Reserve.
