QUEEN ELIZABETH NATIONAL PARK
Safaris, Tours and attractions
Queen Elizabeth National Park, sometimes called the Switzerland of Africa is characterized by volcanic craters, grassy plains and tropical rainforests. The landscape is dominated by snowcapped peaks in the Rwenzori Mountain range to the north, which is commonly known as Mountains of the Moon.
The park is especially scenic with two lakes connected with a channel over looking the peninsular. Sir Andrew Cohen, former governor of the Uganda protectorate, was so fascinated by this National Park that he had this to say, “The grandest view I have ever seen, looking North from Ankole escarpment, with lakes Edward and George and the Kazinga channel in the fore ground and the whole snow capped range of the Rwenzori as a back drop” The park is one of the richest and best managed parks in Africa with an outstanding diversity of field work. It is now under the care of the Uganda Wildlife Authority and was established in 1952 to protect the vegetation and wildlife of the Albertine Rift valley around Lakes Edward and George.

Queen Elizabeth National Park, measuring 2475 square kilometers is set in the Western Rift Valley and includes Kyambura and Kigezi Wildlife Reserves. The altitude of the park ranges between 910metres at Lake Edward to 1845 metres at the top of the escarpment of the rift valley, above sea level.
Queen Elizabeth National Park is characterized by two rainy seasons; March – May and August – November. During the rainy season, rain falls heavily, accompanied by thunder storms, and the vegetation in turn grows faster. Due to its location at the bed of the Western Rift Valley, the average annual rainfall is much lower than most parts of the country. The park’s climate is too dry to permit the growth of closed forests. However, the area around Lake Edward where rainfall is heavy you will find the Maramagambo forest. Temperatures are nice and warm and range between 18 degrees and 28 degrees celcius.

The park has a remarkable range of habitats, tropical forests, rivers, swamps, lakes and the volcanic craters. The water bodies of Lakes George and Edward, Kazinga channel, Crater lakes and Ishasha River dominate this National park. These water bodies provide a rich habitat for 95 mammal species and 606 species of birds, thus offering spectacular sceneries coupled with amazing wildlife viewing opportunities.
To the north of the Maramagambo forest are two small crater lakes surrounded by swamps and forests. The area to the north of Lake George is characterized by extensive swampy forests and is one of Uganda’s wetlands recently designated a Ramsar site.
The Kyambura gorge on the north east boundary of the Park has thick tree top canopies and vines running down to the soft forest floor. The terrain hosts chimpanzees which can be seen chattering up in the tree branches.
