7 Days Mountaineering with Amazing t
ours
(Mt.Elgon)
Mount
Elgon National Park is on the boarder
of Uganda and Kenya and the mountain
is named after the Elogonyi tribe
who once lived in huge caves on
the southern side of the Mountain.
It is an extinct volcano that first
erupted more than 24 million years
ago with the largest surface area
than any extinct volcano in the
world (50kmx80km).
Because of its gradual slope, a
climb to the caldera or crater rim
(4321 meters above sea level) does
not require mountaineering skills.
On the wooded slopes, part of which
includes Mount Elgon National Park,
great caves, gorges and waterfalls
provide some of the most exciting
scenery in Uganda, and the terraced
coffee plantations and bamboo forests
just enhance the wonderful views.
Mt Elgon is not a difficult mountain
to climb. Aspirant hikers need to
be reasonably fit, but no specialized
equipment or skills are needed to
reach the peaks, and the mountain
is not so high that there's a serious
risk of the altitude-related illnesses
that regularly afflict hikers on
the upper slopes of Kilimanjaro
or Kenya Mountains. Elgon can be
climbed at any time of the year,
though the dry season (June-August
and December-March) are preferred.
Birdlife is particularly prolific
in this area and a good bird book
is essential.
